NBA teasers

Posted on November 25th, 2009 in Betting strategy by Raz

What is a teaser?

It’s a bet in which you take two or more teams and add a set amount of points to the lines of each team. In the NBA the most common teasers are 4.5, 5, and 5.5 points, with both higher and lower point totals available from some betting shops.
Let’s say we have a game LA Lakers vs Charlotte Bobcats, where Lakers are favorites by 7 points. So, if you only play the spread staright Lakers need to win by 8 points. If you were to bet a 4.5 point teaser then those lines would become Los Angeles -2.5 and Bobcats +11.5. A teaser needs to contain at least 2 games. You aren’t limited to just two games, either – you can add more games, and your greater risk is rewarded by a greater monetary return. Some books also have a super teaser that allows you even more points (often seven or more) at a lower payoff. Teasers are great to play when there’s a game between two close games and the points you buy can make a big difference.

Usually most of the sportbooks pay a 2 teams teaser (4,5 points) at odds of 1,90 (-110).

One area to concentrate on when betting that NBA teaser is to look at a team you really like to win that is around a 5-7 point favorite. Then basically all you need them to do is win the game. Another one to look at is a small favorite of 1-2 points. You then can get them at a plus three points.
There’s  specific situations where a teaser could be attractive. For example, that your handicapping has led you to identify two solid favorites that you like, but which you are lukewarm about. If both teams were favored by seven, and you figure that they will win by somewhere between five and eight points, then you won’t feel confident betting on them on the point spread, but you also wouldn’t feel confident betting on their opponents. You could confidently bet the moneyline, but the return would be low given the size of the spread. By using a four-point teaser you could adjust both point spreads down so that the spreads are below your predicted score. That might be the best way to confidently maximize profit potential given your suspected result.

Some places will also let you bet totals on your teasers. There are also places that offer different pointspreads. It can vary as much as 3 or 4 points per place, so be sure and check the rules when you bet your NBA teaser. Don’t forget when you bet your teaser to concentrate on the same things that you do normally. Sometimes people forget the basics when they are getting extra points. Don’t be lulled into that. The extra points are a type of security blanket for you. Don’t let the extra points get you into playing games that you would not normally play. Concentrate on your strengths. Look at the situation. Are you playing on a strong home team that rarely loses but doesn’t always cover? They would be a good choice for your teaser. What about an underdog you really like? Those extra points sure are nice to have when you are already a nice dog. I really like those added points when everyone expects a competitive game. You know that when the Lakers play the Spurs, those games are generally close. Those extra points give you a nice feeling when the game is likely to end right around the pointspread number. This is also very helpful in playoff games.

The NBA teasers can be really helpful to your bottom line when playoff time rolls around. You know the games are usually close and teams rarely give up. Near the end of the game the pointspread is usually in doubt. Getting those extra 4 or 5 points can turn your loser into a winner.

We’ll follow up on this strategy and demonstrate if and how profitable can it be . We’ll play NBA teasers only at the recommended sportbooks .

Money management in sportsbetting

Posted on September 29th, 2009 in Betting strategy by Raz

Betting too much on each game

Spending a long time understanding money management in sportsbetting gives you one major conclusion : 99% of sports bettors are betting too much. Think not? Think again.

Would you “bet” 25% of your entire savings account on a single stock that had a 50% chance of going down tomorrow? Of course not. Then why are so many sports bettors willing to risk 20%+ of their bankroll on a single game? It’s easy to risk too much without knowing it.

Quick fix

If I offered you a 10% advantage in a game of chance (55% for you vs. 45%) for 500 bets, would you take that bet? Of course you would. Over the long haul (500 bets), the law of large numbers dictates that you would end up very close to 55% winners (275 winners vs. 225 losers). If we were betting $100 per bet, you’d be up about $5,000 in the end. Easy money.

Now let’s say that I had one constraint. I told you you could start with no more than $500 (your bankroll) and if you ran out of money, you couldn’t re-load. In essence, I was forcing you to bet 20% of your bankroll on each bet. Would you still take it? Think you could still take me for $5,000?

You had better not! You are virtually guaranteed to go bankrupt in this situation. Over the long run, you will come close to 55% winners - it’s a mathematical certainty. But, over the short term, you are guaranteed nothing. Strange streaks will happen. They always do. Over 500 bets, you could easily go 5 or 10 bets in a row (or even more) without winning. You could go 2-18 during a 500 bet session. If I forced you to bet 20% of your bankroll, you’d be crazy to do it because I would take your money like taking candy from a baby.

Yet, in sports betting, most bettors routinely do the equivalent of taking this bet! Almost every sports bettor bets too much per game relative to the size of their bankroll. They don’t think twice about laying half of their entire remaining bankroll on one week’s NFL games. The conclusion is this…

Why The House Wins
Based on my sports betting experience the only explanation is:

The bookie win because you bet too much on every event

You run out of money before you have a chance to let the laws of large numbers work for you. They are banking on your lack of discipline. That’s the main reason (not bad picking) that most sports bettors lose and why The House laughs to the bank.

Knowing Sports Book Terminology

Posted on June 14th, 2009 in Betting strategy by Raz

As with anything in life, if you know it well you will be better off in the long run! Well the same goes for making a bet or placing a wager at an online casino or an online sports book. The difference between most games at an online casino and an online sports book is that the sports book comes with their own set of terminology that they use to describe almost every bet and every scenario.

The great thing about online sports books and online sports book affiliates is that they will try to do almost everything in their power to make your gambling experience an easy one. They will post reviews on online sports books, they will host dictionaries that define sports terms and help you through the process at any chance they get. There is some extremely useful information on the internet for both online casino gamers and sports book fans so be sure to do your research.

It’s a good idea to learn the terms before any cash exchange because once you have made a bet (even if you don’t know what you have done) you have committed to that particular bet so you will simply have to wait and see the outcome.

Take advantage of the online tutorials that are offered on most sites and read as many sports betting guides as you can if you are a first timer to help get the edge that you need in order to make a confident bet that you are happy about. Learning the terms will help you in the long run and it’s not very difficult, before you knowing sports betting and casino terminology will become like a second language to you!

Thoughts On Bet Trading

Posted on March 2nd, 2009 in Betting strategy by Raz

What are your thoughts on bet trading? Of course just like regular sports betting it involves both sports and gambling, but those ones are quite obvious. Here are some of my thoughts on the subject of bet trading.

Bet Trading

If you are sports betting at ordinary bookmakers, you are not betting against other players – but just as in a regular casino, you’re betting against the house. Even though this is the most common way of betting on sports, there are some internet bookers that offer real bet exchange , a sort of peer-to-peer gambling amongst players.

The only way for these bookers to make money is by taking a small commission on every winning bet, usually around 5%. Unquestionable largest of these sport books is Betfair, but it is also the one with the highest
commission fees. Other sites that offer trade bets but for a smaller fee is Betdaq and Sporting Options, but they have significantly less player traffic.

Sports betting in this way is very similar to the way internet poker is played. Or at least the way the bookies make their money on the players. Since poker players are not playing against the house, the poker room takes a small rake out of every pot played as a fee for playing at their site. In bet trading, it is hard to find other gamblers willing to take on your bets. The business concept of bet trading companies is to bring gamblers together, and just like the rake in poker, they make a small amount out of every placed bet.

Furthermore, as in internet poker, the bet trader with the most knowledge of the games will be walking away with the less experienced players’ money. The house (the bookie) will be making their money no matter who’s winning, just as the poker rooms do.

Regular Sports betting

In regular sports betting, players are presented with pre-set odds from the bookie. It is a take-it-or-leave-it sort of offer, where the bookies’ edge lies in the differential between the true odds of a certain scenario and the odds presented to the player.

Finding good sports picks has always been about getting the most profitable odds for a certain outcome, and make no mistake - it still is.
As long as you are able to find someone who is willing to take on your bet, this is where you make your money in bet trading as well.

Future of Bet Trading

It is my belief that the popularity of bet trading will continue to grow. Sport bets will always attract gamblers. As the biggest bet trading companies are faced with tougher competition, commission fees will go down and make the bet trading even more profitable for the players.

The odds of bet trading are already very attractive from a gambler’s perspective, and as more and more gamblers catch on to bet trading the faster sport bettors will abandon the old form of “bookie bets”.
