The English star midfielder who signed a 250 million-dollar deal to leave Real Madrid and try to boost football in the United States had seen limited action in a month with the club due to a sore left ankle.

But Beckham finally displayed the form football enthusiasts hoped he might show Americans, bending in a 20-meter free kick over a wall of defenders and into the left corner in the 28th minute to give the Galaxy the lead for good.

The Galaxy will host Mexican champion Pachuca on August 29 in the championship match of the inaugural tournament, which matched US and Mexican top sides. The winning side will receive one million dollars.

Beckham was wearing the captain’s armband and in the starting lineup for the first time for the Galaxy after coming off the bench in two prior appearances with the team. His first workout with the team was Tuesday.

Beckham entered in the 78th minute in a friendly against English Premiership side Chelsea on July 21 and played 18 minutes last Thursday against United in his first, and thus far only, Major League Soccer match.

After missing games at Toronto and New England, Beckham could make his first MLS start on Sunday when the Galaxy visit New York.
