Poker Hand Rankings among the top rated norms

Be it any variant of poker, it is only the Poker hand rankings that decide the winner. In the mysterious game of poker, five cards out of the plot of seven do the deal. After a player abides by all the rules and follows possible strategies, he comes up with his best five card hand. It is now the poker hands order and their ranking as per the set rules that can make a player either go empty handed or with a large sum of money.

Hand Classifications: We have categorized the poker hand rankings into 9 sections from best to worst as under.

  • Royal Flush: Hand including A, K, Q, J and 10 all from a same suit. It is also called as a ‘Highest Straight Flush’. This is actually an unbeatable hand.
  • Straight Flush: If a hand consists of all five cards in a sequence and that too from the same suit, then it forms a Straight Flush. In case of a tie, the poker hand odds suggest that a hand with the highest top card wins. A lowest straight flush can be a hand with cards as 5, 4, 3, 2, A, where an ace is considered as a one to complete the sequence.
  • Four of a Kind: A hand containing 4 cards of the same rank (i.e. from all the 4 suits), better known as ‘Quads’ and one side card called ‘kicker’. The poker hand odds states that is two players have same four of a kind (can happen in a community card game), then the hand with a highest kicker card wins whereas in case of a tie, the highest four of a kind grabs the deal.
  • Full House: Cards appearing in two sets like 3 cards of equal rank and the other two of equal rank. In an event of a tie, the highest 3 matching cards win. If they also come up as same in multi-deck play then the dice rolls to highest 2 matching cards.
  • Flush: Any five cards from the same suit create a flush. They need not necessarily be in a sequence. In a tie situation the cards are compared for their individual ranking from highest to lowest. A possible flush hand can be with an ace as the high card.
  • Straight: Occurrence of 5 cards in a sequence, whatever suit they may be from. In case of a tie, the hand with the highest top card wins.
  • Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same rank with other two side cards. Also known as ‘Trips’.
  • Two Pair: Two sets of pairs exist in a set of 5 cards. The pairs are compared for ranks.
  • Pair: Two cards of same rank occur as a pair along with three unrelated side cards.
  • High Card: All unrelated cards in a hand which doesn’t fall under any of the above criteria. Here the ranking of the highest card is compared.

These poker hand rankings should be well versed to avoid any chance of being cheated or to avoid giving a massive edge to your opponents.
